Moroccan film opens Arab World Film Festival

The 21st Arab World Film Festival kicked off at CineSesc in São Paulo on Wednesday night, featuring the Moroccan film Calle Málaga. This film tells the story of a Tangier resident's fight to retain her home within her northern Moroccan city, exploring themes of belonging, family, and anguish. The film, directed by Moroccan filmmaker Maryam Touzani, was presented alongside eight other features chosen for their examination of various aspects of Arab society, including memory, change, and territory.

Curator Arthur Jafet emphasized that the festival aims to offer new perspectives on the Arab world rather than defining it. The festival, running from September 2 to 8, includes nine films, with seven Brazilian premieres, and offers additional discussions, conversations, and audience interactions. Festival organizers hope to provide Brazilians with a deeper understanding of Arab culture and facilitate intercultural connections and self-reflection.
