Mohammed Ben Sulayem urges F1 fans to stop targeting stewards online

Dubai: FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has once again urged fans of Formula One to refrain from targeting race stewards online, emphasizing that criticism of sporting decisions should never escalate to threats or personal attacks. This plea comes in the lead-up to the upcoming Formula One Italian Grand Prix at Monza, following an increase in abusive behavior towards FIA stewards following penalties imposed during the recent Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort.

Ben Sulayem, who is expected to be present at the Italian race, initiated the FIA’s United Against Online Abuse (UAOA) campaign in 2023, aimed at combating online harassment in sports through research, policy development, and collaboration between sports organizations, governments, and technology companies. The campaign has garnered support from over 75 governments, sports organizations, academic institutions, and technology groups and is co-funded by the European Union.

Ben Sulayem stated that while disagreements with decisions are an integral part of sports, such disagreements should not be used to justify threats or personal attacks. He also highlighted the significance of Monza, one of the world's most renowned racing circuits, and expressed anticipation for the distinct atmosphere the event promises.

The Italian Grand Prix is anticipated to generate substantial interest, with the race leader Kimi Antolin taking the drivers' championship title and Ferrari drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc aiming to secure strong finishes in both the race and championship standings. Ben Sulayem noted that the vast majority of fans support the sport and the individuals who work diligently behind the scenes to ensure each race's success.
