'Melaka polls likely after Umno general assembly'

Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has hinted that the upcoming Melaka election may occur following the 2026 Umno general assembly. The assembly is set to take place from September 9 to 12, though Zahid did not confirm if the state polls would be held immediately after, stating it was Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusuf's decision.

Melaka's diverse political landscape suggests a need for a customized formula and alliance approach, according to Zahid in a recent interview. Speculation about the election timing is high, with Perikatan Nasional chairman Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar suggesting it could occur before November to avoid interfering with Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia exams.

PN chairman's recent directive for coalition machinery readiness also fuels speculation of an election within two months, as does a statement by PN, indicating readiness for a pact. Zahid clarified that any pact and seat negotiations would be contingent on the dissolution of the Melaka assembly. While Umno and BN will not relinquish their 21 seats won in the 2021 election, they are open to allowing other coalition parties to contest the remaining seven seats.
