Manitoba expanding rent control threshold to $2,000 a month

Manitoba's government has announced it will expand the province's rent control program. This decision comes after the NDP government made the commitment in March. Under the expansion, renters paying up to $2,000 per month will be covered by the program, starting next year. This is an increase from the current threshold of $1,670.

The expansion is expected to cover at least 2,000 additional rental units. Landlords can only raise rents by three percent for rent-control units next year, compared to the current 1.8 percent. Some exemptions apply, including for rental units less than 20 years old.
