Man United’s data team suggested “elite” midfield transfer this summer but INEOS fluffed their lines

Manchester United finalized their much-anticipated midfield reshuffle, acquiring three Premier League-experienced players. These signings included Andrey Santos, followed closely by Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba. Nevertheless, according to reported sources, none of the trio were the club's primary targets. Upon Ederson's medical failure, the focus shifted to another Brazilian player, while the absence of Mateus Fernandes prompted the activation of Belgian midfielder Carlos Baleba's release clause.

The Red Devils' data team had previously recommended pursuing a different option – Mamadou Sangare from RC Lens. Interestingly, ESPN reported that United's analytical team had proposed this Cameroonian as an alternative after the Real Madrid superstar Aurelien Tchouameni was deemed beyond the club's reach. United data analysts believed that Sangare had similar underlying metrics to the Portuguese international, Youri Tielemans.

However, the club missed an opportunity to secure Sangare. Moisés Caicedo, an Ecuadorian player, opted to join Brighton & Hove Albion instead, crediting his experience at the Seagulls for helping him secure a lucrative transfer to Chelsea. The 24-year-old appears to have potential, and a successful stint at Brentford could significantly boost his value and future earnings.

The data team highlighted that United had been monitoring Sangare closely due to his comparable statistics to Fernandes during his time at West Ham United. United's struggle with agents who prefer to move clients into the Premier League at mid-table clubs could have influenced their decision. Moisés Caicedo's move to Chelsea for £115 million is an example of such trend.

Whether United's decision not to push harder for Sangare will prove beneficial or not remains to be seen. For now, Michael Carrick and the new trio of midfielders must work together to propel the team towards success in the upcoming season.
