Language requirement change from Cantonese to Chinese not targeting specific students – HKU med school

The University of Hong Kong's (HKU) medical school has clarified that it revised its admission requirements from Cantonese proficiency to Chinese language skills, not to single out any specific group of students. The Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine explained that the changes are aimed at providing a comprehensive evaluation of applicants from various backgrounds.

Previously, the medical programs required a good working knowledge of Cantonese, but the faculty has now updated its language prerequisites to emphasize Chinese fluency. The statement emphasized that while candidates must be fluent in either Cantonese or Mandarin, students are expected to develop strong Cantonese skills during their studies.

The faculty clarified that graduates will serve Hong Kong residents, making Cantonese proficiency an essential foundation for effective clinical training and medical services for local patients. The English language requirement remains unchanged, as classes at HKU are primarily taught in English. HKU's medical school is one of two in Hong Kong, with the Chinese University of Hong Kong also offering a medical program.

The government has approved plans to establish a third medical school at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, set to begin enrolling students in 2028.
