LAMATA’s Quality Bus Corridor Project is Transforming Lagos Commutes

Lagos’ busy streets are being transformed by the Quality Bus Corridor Project (QBC) run by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA). This project aims to improve public transportation in the city, making commuting more efficient, reliable, safe, and dignified for Lagosians.

In traffic-choked Lagos, LAMATA recognized that improving public transportation has far-reaching impacts. It connects citizens to jobs, businesses to markets, and communities to opportunities, ultimately creating a more productive and sustainable city. The QBC project focuses on redesigning public transportation infrastructure, prioritizing bus movement, constructing modern bus stops and terminals, and implementing intelligent transport systems (ITS) for real-time traffic management and service.

Phase 1 of the project comprises two packages: Package 1A, covering the Yaba–Lawanson–Ijesha–Cele corridor, and Package 1B, covering the Ketu–Alapere–Akanimodo corridor. These corridors link densely populated areas of the mainland with key commercial and employment centers. Phase 2 focuses on the Abule-Egba–Iju-Ishaga corridor, addressing severe peak-period congestion and improving connectivity between the western suburbs and the wider metropolitan transport network.

The project targets major transport arteries, such as the Yaba–Cele corridor, which serves thousands of daily commuters including workers, students, traders, and others. By providing dedicated bus lanes, improving junctions, and establishing well-designed terminals, the QBC project aims to reduce travel times by up to 50%, making journeys more predictable and less stressful.

QBC's user-centred design includes prioritized movement at intersections, advanced shelters and terminals with lighting, real-time arrival displays, inclusive accessibility, and intelligent traffic lights that prioritize buses. The project also emphasizes infrastructure improvements, such as strengthening road surfaces and installing energy-efficient LED streetlights.

Ecologically, QBC encourages a shift towards cleaner transport by promoting low-emitting buses and eco-friendly construction materials, ultimately aiming to reduce Lagos' greenhouse gas emissions.
