King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV: Body Arrives in Uganda September 4 as Nation Mourns Young Monarch

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the 34-year-old monarch of the Kingdom of Tooro and the nation of Uganda, has passed away. The cause of death was officially confirmed as cancer after he received medical treatment in the United States. His death was announced on August 27, 2026, by Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki of the Tooro Kingdom. This news sparked widespread mourning across Uganda and the world, with political, cultural, and religious leaders paying tribute to the late king.

Following his death, preparations were made for the repatriation of King Oyo's remains. Initially scheduled for September 3, the date was later changed to September 4, 2026. The body is set to arrive at Entebbe International Airport, where it will be received by President Yoweri Museveni. From there, it will be transported by military helicopter to Kyegegwa District, where a ceremonial procession will take place.

The procession will pass through the districts of Kyegegwa, Kyenjojo, and Kabarole before entering Fort Portal City, where the King's remains will be taken to Karuziika Palace, the traditional seat of the Tooro Kingdom.

A nine-day period of official mourning has been declared, beginning immediately upon the King's arrival at the palace. Traditional rites will be conducted by the royal clan (Ababiito) in accordance with Tooro customs. The King will be laid to rest at the royal burial grounds at Karambi on September 12, 2026, marking the 31st anniversary of his coronation when he ascended the throne at the age of three.

His death marks the end of a 31-year reign, during which he was celebrated for his modern, humble, and visionary leadership.
