King Charles, Macron and Burnham to preview Bayeux Tapestry display

King Charles, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham will preview the Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum ahead of its public display in London from September 10. The 70-meter tapestry, originally embroidered in England but kept in France for centuries, depicts the Norman Conquest and the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

Macron stated that the loan until July 2027 symbolizes the strong ties between the UK and France. The royal trio, along with Burnham's wife and Macron's wife, will view significant scenes, such as King Harold's coronation and death. Schoolchildren from both countries will also attend the event, with King Charles and Macron expected to deliver speeches.

The move to loan the tapestry to the British Museum was announced during the French state visit to the UK in July 2025, seen as an emblem of the partnership between the nations. Initial concerns over the tapestry's fragility were alleviated by the British Museum's ideal display conditions. French authorities noted that the flat display, rather than upright, is better for fiber conservation of the 900-year-old fibers.

Some sections of the tapestry are believed to have been lost or destroyed, notably during the French Revolution when it was saved from being used to cover soldiers' carts.
