Kansas high school girls making history in inaugural flag football game

Kansas girls etched a new chapter in sports history on Wednesday night at Piper District Stadium in Kansas City, Kansas, when they played in the inaugural flag football game. The landmark event unfolded at Piper High School, where girls across the state are carving their place in a sport long deemed a boys' domain.

In an interview with Fox 4 Kansas City, Piper High School Flag Football head coach Jimmy Thompson praised the camaraderie and hard work of his young athletes. "The big thing that I've noticed with our girls is that they have each other's back," Thompson remarked, highlighting their strong sense of unity. He noted that the girls relish every moment on the field, engaging both physically and emotionally.

Flag football has now been officially recognized as a high school sport in Kansas, thanks to the Kansas City Chiefs and the support of the Kansas City Wolf Cheerleaders and the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA). Four teams—a combination of De Soto, Spring Hill, Piper, and Bishop Ward—fought fiercely for supremacy on a single field, the outcome being more than just a win or loss.

Hope McCallop, a player for Piper High School, reflected on the significance of the game beyond the scoreboard. "We have good sportsmanship behind each other and we all share with one another," said McCallop. "We're all going to be at each other's hearts, and it's just girls supporting girls." Even young fans, like Nora Fogleman, a fourth grader, were inspired by the big girls' performance. "They know a lot more, so if I want to do flag football, I should probably learn a little bit more," Fogleman noted.

The impact of this historic moment transcends the win/loss record. For many of these young girls, watching these athletes compete has been a powerful message: "I can do that too."
