Just 35% of 2026 BECE candidates score aggregates 6–24 – CSSPS

In the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), only about 35% of candidates achieved aggregate scores ranging from six to 24, according to the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS). Coordinator Sherif Sulemana revealed that around 252,000 students, or 35%, obtained this particular aggregate. Additionally, just 17% of candidates, which translates to approximately 107,000 individuals, achieved aggregates falling between six and 18.

In total, about 620,000 students sat the examination, with around 565,000 qualifying for the placement exercise. Consequently, roughly 55,000 candidates are likely to be excluded from placement into second-cycle institutions. Candidates who failed either English Language or Mathematics are disqualified from placement. Despite some misconceptions, failing Grade 9 does not automatically equate to failure under the standardised grading system; rather, it depends on the candidate's raw examination scores.

Prior to the placement exercise, the CSSPS has set up call centres to assist candidates and parents with any placement-related inquiries. Those residing far from regional resolution centres can instead contact these call centres for support.
