Judge blocks new Trump bid against birthright citizenship

On Wednesday, a US federal judge halted President Donald Trump's attempt to restrict the constitutional right of birthright citizenship. The injunction, issued by US District Judge Deborah Boardman of Maryland, prevents the enforcement of the new executive order targeting what the administration labels "birth tourism." The judge's 35-page ruling states that the Supreme Court has already affirmed that "children in the certified class are 'citizens at birth'."

The president's latest move follows his initial executive order from August 6, which aimed to limit citizenship to those born to parents in the US legally or temporarily. Rights groups celebrated the decision, noting that the administration has lost on this issue twice before. The order was specifically aimed at individuals who allegedly enter the country under the guise of tourism with the intention of giving birth.

Prior to this executive order, Trump had proposed that children born to undocumented parents would not automatically become US citizens. Lower courts had previously blocked these attempts, asserting that the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment grants nearly all individuals born on US soil automatic citizenship. The Supreme Court concurred with this ruling.

Trump's efforts to curtail birthright citizenship are part of a broader immigration agenda that includes deporting millions of undocumented migrants and removing protections for nationals of over a dozen countries.
