Jive Bunny And The Mastermixers creator dies at 84

John Pickles, the creator of the novelty pop act Jive Bunny and The Mastermixers, has passed away at the age of 84, according to the company he founded. The group, which originated in Rotherham in 1989, achieved three UK number ones with songs such as Swing The Mood, That's What I Like, and Let's Party. Jive Bunny's music often blended contemporary pop with hits from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, utilizing synthesisers and sampling techniques.

Pickles was hailed as a "true pioneer in the music industry" and a "leader, an entrepreneur, a businessman, and an incredibly talented songwriter" by Mastermix company in an official statement. He was also fondly remembered as a "dad" to many people who benefited from his creativity, vision, and passion for music. Jive Bunny and The Mastermixers consisted of Pickles, his son Andrew, who served as a director for Mastermix, and Doncaster DJ and producer Les Hemstock.

The group had a UK top 10 album, Jive Bunny The Album, and five UK top 10 hits, including their number ones. The iconic Jive Bunny album covers and music videos featured a cartoon rabbit, with costumed actors also appearing as the character for promotional purposes. Steve White, a personal acquaintance of Pickles, described the group's chart success as a "people's success story," emphasizing that it was something the family could enjoy together.

In December 2024, Mastermix released a new Jive Bunny production called 3, 6, 9, celebrating the origins of Jive Bunny while incorporating a modern twist.
