Isro’s GSLV-F17 successfully places EOS-05 Earth observation satellite in geosynchronous orbit

Sriharikota witnessed a successful launch of India's first imaging satellite, EOS-05, on Friday. The 51.7-meter tall, 420.5-tonne GSLV-F17 rocket propelled the 2,367kg satellite into a sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit. This marked the 19th GSLV flight for Isro, with V Narayanan, the Isro chairman, confirming that the satellite reached its precise geosynchronous orbit.

This launch surpasses the previous record of carrying a 1536kg payload, with the GSLV-F17 now carrying the heaviest payload to date at 2,367kg. Through a series of onboard manoeuvres, the satellite will settle into its final orbit at perigee 170km, apogee 28,934km, and an inclination of 19.28 degrees. EOS-05, India's first dedicated geosynchronous orbit imaging satellite, will provide strategic data.

Isro plans six more launches this financial year, including the navigation satellite NVS-03 and the Gaganyaan first uncrewed mission.
