Israeli athletes will no longer compete in Northern Ireland triathlon

The Israeli athletes who were scheduled to participate in an international triathlon in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, have decided not to compete in the event, according to race organizers. The North West Triathlon Club (NWTC) made strong representations and firmly stated that they could not support the participation of four Israeli athletes in the Europe Triathlon Cup.

However, Julie Middleton, a member of the legislative Northern Ireland assembly representing the pro-UK Democratic Unionist Party, expressed her disappointment, stating that the exclusion of the Israeli athletes from the race, set to feature up to 200 athletes from various countries, casts a negative reflection on Londonderry. She argued that an international sporting event should showcase the city's hospitality and openness, but instead, it has become associated with the exclusion of athletes due to their Israeli nationality.

The NWTC informed the public through a social media statement that they only became aware of the potential Israeli athletes' participation when the provisional entry list for the race was published on the World Triathlon website. The organization emphasized that their stance was not directed at anyone on the basis of religion or ethnicity, but rather concerned the representation of the state of Israel in international sports and the attempt to present normality on the global sporting stage while Palestinians continue to suffer.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed that they had become aware of potential protest activity related to the event via social media. It should be noted that there have been previous protests against the Republic of Ireland's upcoming games against Israel in the European football's Nations League, but those fixtures are still taking place, albeit the Republic's match on October 4 will be held behind closed doors at a neutral venue overseas.

Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967, and violence against Palestinians by Israeli settlers has increased following the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas from the Gaza Strip.
