Inter fullback Federico Dimarco wins top honors at Italian players’ association gala

Milan (AP) — Inter Milan fullback Federico Dimarco received top accolades at the Italian players’ association gala, despite expressing disappointment over his contract extension. Dimarco was named the best player of last season, having contributed significantly to Inter's Serie A victory. His performance on the left wing was instrumental in securing the 11-point lead over Napoli.

He had previously been acknowledged as the MVP by Serie A in May. However, with his contract set to expire post-season, Dimarco voiced his hope for an extension discussion. Inter recently replaced their long-serving sporting director, Piero Ausilio, with Dario Baccin. Dimarco, who grew up in Inter's youth system, expressed mixed feelings about Ausilio's departure, given their shared successes.

Despite speculations about potential interest from Barcelona, Dimarco remained committed to Inter, stating, "It's always nice to be mentioned alongside these great clubs. But you know my history with Inter. I grew up here." The fullback was also recognized among the top four defenders, alongside teammates Alessandro Bastoni and Manuel Akanji, and midfielder Marco Palestra.

Lautaro Martinez, Nico Paz, and Donyell Malen were awarded as the best forwards, while Hakan Calhanoglu, Scott McTominay, and Hakan Calhanoglu claimed the midfield honors. Mile Svilar of Roma secured the best goalkeeper position, and Cesc Fabregas was named the best coach. The goal of the season went to Francisco Conceicao, who scored a remarkable shot for Juventus against Roma.

The awards were determined by player votes, excluding the goal of the season, which was chosen by fans.
