India's economic growth source of confidence for world: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held extensive talks with his Belgian counterpart Bart De Wever on September 3, 2026, to expand cooperation in various fields. In his media statement, Mr. Modi highlighted India's robust 7.8% economic growth in the last quarter, stating that India's rise is a source of confidence and new opportunities for the world.

The Indian Prime Minister also emphasized the conclusion of the India-European Union free trade pact as a significant milestone, noting that New Delhi and Brussels are building a broad and more strategic relationship. Amid global upheaval, India's economy has maintained momentum, with the Prime Minister describing the growth story as a source of confidence and opportunities.

Defence and security cooperation between the two countries was described as a key pillar of the relationship. Both sides agreed to enhance military exchanges, training cooperation, intelligence sharing, and combat crime. People-to-people ties, start-up connections, maritime sector capacity building, university and research collaboration, and a Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement were also highlighted.

The two nations pledged to resolve conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia through dialogue and diplomacy, supporting all efforts for peace. India and Belgium are committed to eradicating terrorism and have prioritized high technology and clean energy cooperation. An MoU on renewable energy was signed to boost sustainability cooperation, while increasing cooperation in critical minerals, semiconductors, and processing/recycling was decided.

De Wever's visit builds on the Belgian Economic Mission to India led by Princess Astrid last year, resulting in around 40 agreements. Historically, Belgium was among the first European countries to establish diplomatic relations with independent India in 1947 and remains a significant economic partner with $13.01 billion in bilateral trade in 2025-26.
