A German engineer has unveiled a world-first modular camera system that can be fully customized with interchangeable sensors, mounts, and software. Dubbed the Circuit Valley CHC5, this open system may become the world's first commercially available modular camera. The CHC5 allows build-your-own setups, ranging from global shutters to low-light sensors to a black-and-white shooter.

Initial sensors available for the system range from a 1/2.3-inch sensor to a Micro Four Thirds format. The modular camera system also supports various lenses, including riggable mounts for Canon RF, Sony E, Micro Four Thirds, C Mount, and CS mounts. The system comes with an aluminum box-style enclosure, featuring a standard tripod mount and USB power.

Designed largely for machine vision and industrial cameras, the CHC5's customizable software may attract tinkerers in Raspberry Pi-based rigs, as well as those interested in specialized cameras such as astrophotography. Circuit Valley, a German company founded in 2011, specializes in open-source embedded systems and is crowdfunding to fund the development and manufacturing of the CHC5 modular camera system.

A complete kit, including the camera base, sensor, and lens mount, is available for a €589 pledge, which is approximately $685, £507, AU$819, or CA$813. The CHC5 is currently seeking crowdfunding, with the final manufacturing expected to begin in 2027.
