ICE whistleblower warned of ‘unprecedented lowering of standards’ during hiring spree

A whistleblower inside Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) warned last year that the agency was hiring numerous new officers who had not undergone basic vetting procedures, violating federal rules and jeopardizing the agency's safety, a newly released complaint has revealed. The official, a 17-year employee and former Republican, stated in a memo to the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General that ICE was prioritizing speed over safety, putting the Department of Homeland Security at risk of infiltration and insider threats.

The complaint reported that ICE's human resources division was finalizing job offers before conducting preliminary vetting steps, including fingerprinting, identity verification, and credit checks. The official claimed that this "unprecedented lowering of standards sacrifices proper risk mitigation for expediency" and could result in increased vulnerability to insider threats and foreign influence.
