'I knew this day would come' – Jakob Omrzel takes his first pro win in style on Vuelta a España stage 12

Twenty-year-old Slovenian cyclist Jakob Omrzel, riding for Bahrain Victorious, secured his first professional stage win at Vuelta a España's stage 12. The victory came after a spectacular solo attack, as he rode away from the breakaway group and finished over two minutes ahead of the rest of the field. This marked the beginning of a fiery General Classification (GC) battle as Enric Mas (Movistar) mounted a strong counterattack.

Omrzel admitted he was not taken aback by the win, stating that he had anticipated this moment sooner or later, though he was certainly not expecting it to occur during his first Grand Tour. He spoke of the exceptional teamwork within his team, noting that they were as focused and synchronized as if they were playing a video game.

Omrzel also revealed that this win made him the youngest Slovenian to ever win a Grand Tour stage, a distinction that even eclipses a notable cyclist's achievement from 2020. Despite the pride in this record, Omrzel remained humble and focused on enjoying the moment, highlighting the remarkable level of work he had put in to achieve this milestone.
