How to Avoid Getting Struck by Lightning While Walking

Before setting out on a rainy day walk, check a reliable weather forecast for your area. Pay attention to thunderstorm warnings and severe weather alerts. If storms are expected, consider postponing your walk or choosing a safer form of transportation.

Once thunder is heard, move immediately toward a sturdy building or enclosed vehicle. Do not delay seeking shelter under trees or temporary structures, as they offer little protection from lightning. Avoid open fields, playgrounds and large open areas which leave you exposed during storms.

Stay away from tall trees, as lightning can strike them and conduct electrical currents across branches and into you. Avoid water and wet areas like rivers and lakes, since water conducts electricity. Do not shelter under small structures like bus shelters or gazebos that may not provide adequate protection.

Avoid elevated locations, hills, rooftops and other high ground during thunderstorms, as they can increase your exposure. Stay away from metal fences, railings and other conductive structures that lightning can travel through. Do not lie flat on the ground if caught without shelter, as lightning currents can spread across the ground.

Once you reach a safe shelter, avoid unnecessary contact with electrical equipment, plumbing and other conductive systems. Stay inside until at least 30 minutes have passed since the last thunder clap. Then, wait another 30 minutes before resuming your journey. Keep moving calmly toward your sheltered destination, avoiding stops to take photos or make phone calls.
