Historic Hong Kong pawn shop gets new lease on life as vibrant community space

In a bustling part of Hong Kong’s Wan Chai district, a historic pawn shop has been repurposed into a vibrant community space, offering a unique blend of nostalgia and modern appeal. The four-story building, constructed in 1924, once thrived as Chun On Pawn Shop, providing financial assistance to residents during the post-war era.

After closing in 2024, the establishment reopened in mid-August as a pop-up exhibition space, run by One Bite Social, a non-profit organization dedicated to reimagining urban areas. The venue, nestled within a well-preserved pre-war tenement building, showcases antique pawnbroking tools, historical photographs, and community workshops, all housed in a structure that remains largely unchanged since its construction.

The ground floor, with its original terrazzo finishes and protective screen, serves as a public gathering area, while the upper floors, once used for storage, now host exhibitions featuring architectural details like the building’s pitched roof. Visitors, ranging from retired residents to young social workers, have expressed appreciation for the shop’s ability to preserve Hong Kong’s architectural heritage while fostering community engagement.

One visitor recalled how pawn shops were a lifeline for families during the post-war period, highlighting the shop’s significance in providing essential financial support. The exhibition, expected to run until December 19, aims to inspire the preservation of historic buildings by demonstrating innovative ways to transform them into social spaces.
