High School Football: 5 things to know before Week 3

Week 3 of high school football in the Miami Valley is set to commence on Friday, September 4. Among the 27 teams with a first-time win streak of two games, a few stand out with the potential to achieve their best starts in recent memory. Fairborn and Dixie aim to reach 3-0 for the first time since 2004 and 2012, respectively. Troy Christian attempts to end its eight-year run of not reaching 3-0, following its 21-game losing streak start.

Other teams with notable droughts include Beavercreek, Belmont, Alter, Greenon, and Bellbrook. Only five area games this week feature a pair of 2-0 teams: Harrison vs. Beavercreek, Belmont vs. Columbus South, Minster vs. New Bremen, Eaton vs. Talawanda, and Lima Central Catholic vs. Urbana. Wide receiver Jamier Brown, who recently returned to Wayne after two one-game suspensions, will make his season debut against Lakewood St. Edward.

Kye Graham has led the Greater Western Ohio Conference in passing through two weeks, while James Dyer IV has shone as Wayne's top receiver. The Midwest Athletic Conference and the Ohio Heritage Conference divisions kick off their league play this week, with notable crossover games between the North and South Divisions. Valley View travels to Bellbrook in a Southwestern Buckeye League matchup, while Tecumseh plays Shawnee in the lone Central Buckeye Conference crossover game.

The best overall point differential in the area through Week 2 belongs to Troy Christian, who has outscored opponents 83-0. Urbana, New Bremen, and Fairborn follow closely in points scored. Belmont and Marion Local lead in total points, while Oakwood, Urbana, and Troy Christian possess the top defenses in the area. With temperatures expected to reach the low 90s and a heat index above 100 degrees, several games have adjusted their kickoff times to accommodate for the heat.
