Hidden China risks are emerging in America’s multibillion-dollar AI data center boom

Two of America's leading AI companies, OpenAI and Anthropic, have entered a price war to retain enterprise clients who are shifting away due to low-cost Chinese competitors. Both firms are cutting costs as computing expenses rise, prompting companies in Europe and Silicon Valley to reduce their AI usage. This has enabled Chinese developers like DeepSeek and Moonshot to attract major business accounts.

According to Silicon Data's token price index, the Financial Times reports that consumer fees for top US models have dropped nearly 25% since mid-July. This sharp decline signals a shift for domestic developers, who previously focused on proprietary, closed architectures and competed mainly on technical prowess rather than pricing.

OpenAI has reduced the cost of its most affordable option, GPT-5.6 Luna, by 80%, bringing per-million input and output token rates from $1 and $6, respectively, to $0.20 and $1.20. Anthropic has also lowered the price of its Claude Opus 5 model, offering top-notch reasoning at half the cost of its premium Fable 5 tier. Furthermore, Anthropic has scrapped a scheduled price hike for its Sonnet 5 model.

The pricing battle intensifies as both OpenAI and Anthropic prepare for IPOs valued at over a trillion dollars, while investors push for clear profit prospects amidst heavy infrastructure investments. In response, both US providers have transitioned from flat-rate subscriptions to usage-based billing, charging enterprises based on their actual computing consumption. Corporate customers such as Airbnb and DoorDash have begun utilizing Chinese-built models to cut operational expenses.

These moves align with rapid advancements from Chinese labs, which have significantly narrowed the technical performance gap with top American systems. This allows developers to freely download, run, and modify model weights.
