Hegseth Extends Mideast Deployments Into 2027, Escalating Strain on Troops

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has extended military deployments in the Middle East, indicating the conflict may continue into 2027, according to officials familiar with the situation. This strategy, aimed at providing President Trump with options in the ongoing war, is placing strain on troops and their families. Twenty-nine warships, air-defense units, fighter squadrons, and paratroopers are now deployed across the region, creating a maintenance backlog that could take years to address.

The deployment decision comes as President Trump has taken a mixed approach to the Iran situation. He recently embraced an economic pressure campaign, hoping to compel Iran to negotiate, while Iran continues to exchange fire with the U.S., asserting control over the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has reportedly discussed the possibility of declaring the Iran war over, citing his preference for economic pressure to force Iran's regime to dismantle its nuclear program or collapse.

The prolonged conflict has led to extended deployments for troops, with air defense units' standard timeline shifting from nine months to 12 months.
