Green Party leader Zack Polanski to stand in by-election for Starmer’s seat

London — Green Party Leader Zack Polanski has declared his intention to contest the Holborn and St Pancras by-election, aimed at succeeding Keir Starmer, according to the Camden New Journal. Polanski, who assumed leadership of the left-wing party last year, intends to represent the Greens in this central London contest, which has traditionally been a secure constituency for Labour.

Speaking to the publication, the Green leader expressed his deep connection to the community, stating, "I have lived and worked in this community over many years, I know it well and I love it. It represents so many of the things that make London so special." Polanski is enthusiastic about the prospect of representing the area in Parliament.

Keir Starmer stepped down from his seat in the House of Commons this week, citing a desire to focus more on international affairs. He resigned as Prime Minister earlier this year following a loss of support within his own party and has been succeeded by Andy Burnham. The election date has not been set yet, and local Green Party members will select Polanski as their candidate, with the selection expected to occur next week.

Polanski's campaign promises include fighting for constituents without fear of influence from large donors or party directives. He also vows to oppose the prioritization of corporations and wealth by Labour, instead advocating for those struggling to meet their financial obligations. While Polanski's leadership has contributed to a surge in Green Party membership and a strong showing in the May local elections, he has faced criticism over candidate vetting and social media behavior.

Polanski has been a member of the London Assembly, overseeing Mayor Sadiq Khan since 2021. Starmer previously secured the Holborn and St Pancras seat in 2024, winning it by a margin of 11,572 votes. However, the area faced a significant challenge from an independent left-wing candidate and the Greens.
