Green Communities Initiative launched at Godokpe

The Department of Community Development inaugurated the Green Communities Initiative at Godokpe, situated in the Ho Central Municipality of Ghana's Volta Region. Founded on the principle of "Building Resilient and Sustainable Communities Through Green Economy Development," the initiative aims to foster environmental stewardship and bolster local economic stability.

Speaking with Adom News, Stephen Blay, the National Director of the Department, revealed that Godokpe was chosen due to its demonstrated dedication to environmental preservation, notably its tree-planting efforts. The programme will emphasize community-led tree planting, environmental education, and sustainable livelihood generation, involving traditional authorities, young individuals, and decentralized governance bodies.

Blay emphasized that a representative community from each district across Ghana will join the tree-planting component of the programme. He highlighted the growing impact of climate change on Ghanaian communities, citing issues like flooding, drought, soil erosion, declining agricultural yields, and deforestation. Rural-urban migration and limited economic prospects have exacerbated these vulnerabilities, necessitating an integrated strategy for environmental restoration and economic empowerment.

Blay called on Godokpe residents to actively engage in tree protection and nurturing to ensure the initiative's long-term success. He also pledged ongoing support from the department, including skills training and start-up assistance for young people to foster economic autonomy. Togbe William Ahotor, representing the elders and people of Godokpe, thanked the department for selecting the community and pledged their commitment to the initiative.

However, Ahotor requested immediate attention to the poor road conditions that persistently affect residents, urging Blay to liaise with relevant authorities for resolution. Blay assured the community that he would relay the road issue to the appropriate authorities for assessment and action.
