Grant ‘phantom’ council DG access to lawyers, Court orders IGP, AGF

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered police and government officials to allow Adeniyi Adeyemi, a man claiming to be the Director-General of a disowned organization, to have access to his lawyers. The court did not grant his request for release, bail or medical treatment, but directed the Inspector-General of Police and Attorney-General of the Federation to explain why additional requests for his freedom should not be granted.

Judge Obiora Egwuatu postponed the case to September 9 for the government to respond. Adeyemi was arrested in July after a warrant was issued for his arrest for failing to appear in court. He faces charges of forgery, fraud and impersonation over claims he head the PFIPC, an organization the government has disavowed. Prosecutors say Adeyemi forged official documents, including an appointment letter supposedly from President Bola Tinubu and the Chief of Staff.

He denies the allegations and claims the council exists. The case follows a House of Representatives committee investigation into the PFIPC after the organization was included in the 2026 budget. The panel found no evidence the council was established by law or presidential order and that the purported appointment letter was fabricated. The committee also discovered 58 bank accounts and 12 entities linked to Adeyemi.
