Gloria Steinem, potent and elegant voice of US feminism and co-founder of Ms. Magazine, dies at 92

American journalist, activist, and feminist icon Gloria Steinem passed away peacefully at her New York City home on Thursday, her foundation announced. At 92, Steinem leaves behind a legacy of advocating for women's rights. Before gaining prominence in the women's rights movement, Steinem worked as a journalist in the 1960s, exposing gender inequalities.

She gained national attention in 1963 with a report on sexism at New York's Playboy Club. Steinem's awakening to feminism occurred in 1969 when she had an abortion, a personal experience that opened her eyes to the struggles women faced. After this experience, she transitioned from writing to public speaking, traveling extensively to raise awareness and organize events.

In the 1970s, Steinem co-founded Ms Magazine and the National Women’s Political Caucus, as well as the first National Women’s Conference in Houston. Throughout her career, Steinem faced public scrutiny due to her appearance, personal choices, and single status. Despite these challenges, she remained committed to her cause, emphasizing the importance of listening to others and believing in their potential.
