GJA calls for swift investigation into alleged assault of Adom Brands journalist in Nkwanta South

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has strongly condemned an alleged assault on Adom Brands’ Oti Regional Correspondent, Obrempongba Kwame Owusu, by suspected military personnel enforcing a curfew in Nkwanta South. The Association is urging the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) to conduct a thorough and speedy investigation into the incident and punish anyone found responsible.

GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwomfour emphasized the importance of protecting journalists while they are on duty at a press conference. The incident reportedly took place on Saturday, July 11, during the coverage of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency executive elections in the region. According to Dwomfour, the GJA possesses photographic evidence that could aid in identifying the individuals involved in the attack.

The Association has offered to share the images with the relevant authorities and the media to support the investigation, but has chosen not to release the evidence until the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service have completed their respective investigations. Dwomfour stressed that journalists must be able to carry out their duties without fear, intimidation, or physical assault, especially when reporting on matters of public interest.

He called upon security agencies to ensure that the rights and safety of journalists are respected while they perform their professional responsibilities.
