Garment units in Tiruppur plan meeting with textile mills on Sept. 9 to address yarn price issue

On September 9, garment industry associations in Tiruppur are set to meet with textile mill associations to discuss the rising cost of yarn. R. Dhamodharan, secretary of the South India Hosiery Manufacturers Association, informed that representatives from nine Tiruppur-based associations, including job workers, recently convened on September 2.

The garment industry is increasingly concerned about the hike in yarn prices, the secretary noted. While the government removed import duty on cotton till October, the benefits are yet to be realized. Cotton yarn spun in Tamil Nadu costs ₹18 to ₹20 per kg more than that produced in Gujarat. Garment units in Tiruppur primarily purchase yarn from Tamil Nadu mills, which are largely export-oriented.

Dhamodharan revealed that cotton yarn is pricier than polyester yarn. He stressed the need to meet the mills directly to resolve the issue and convey their concerns to the Central and State governments. The exports of cotton yarn from Indian mills to China and Vietnam have surged this year, affecting the competitiveness of the Indian garment industry.
