Fuel price: Petrol marketers have put Tinubu’s subsidy argument to shame — Atiku

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has criticized President Bola Tinubu's argument for removing petrol subsidies, according to candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar. Atiku spoke in a statement released by his media team on Thursday, stating that IPMAN's call for government intervention to curb fuel price increases has undermined Tinubu's position.

IPMAN President, Abubakar Maigandi, had previously appealed to Tinubu to negotiate a deal with Dangote Refinery to lower fuel prices, which had recently risen to between N1,310 and N1,350 per litre. Atiku acknowledged the significance of IPMAN's intervention, noting that it came from people who are directly involved in the distribution and sale of petroleum products and therefore have a more accurate understanding of how high petrol prices are affecting businesses and families.

Atiku emphasized that IPMAN has come to the right conclusion by advocating for government intervention to alleviate the burden of expensive petrol on Nigerians. He also pointed out that Tinubu's argument for removing subsidies has been undermined by its reliance on confusing import-subsidy arrangements with a transparent, production-linked intervention aimed at strengthening domestic refining and providing relief to consumers.
