Former Real Madrid star calls for tough punishment for Raul Asencio: ‘He needs a strong sanction’

Miguel Torres, a former Real Madrid player, has called for a strong punishment for Raul Asencio, who was recently convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol. Asencio was stopped by police in the south of Gran Canaria, three days after he was back in pre-season training. He had nearly four times the legal limit of alcohol in his blood.

The defender accepted a fine and an eight-month driving ban. Real Madrid has launched an internal investigation into the incident, with manager Jose Mourinho expressing his disappointment. Asencio is also facing two other legal cases, one of which has already been resolved, while the other is still under investigation. Torres, in a public statement, urged for a response that sets an example, emphasizing that driving in such a state can put others at risk.

While he didn't call for Asencio's immediate dismissal, he believed the player needed a strong sanction. Torres also suggested that financial penalties alone might not suffice, advocating for awareness campaigns to help society and demonstrate that athletes can be role models.
