Fernandez 'didn't hesitate' over record Man City move

Enzo Fernandez expressed no hesitation when Manchester City made a record-equalling £125 million (£169 million) transfer offer, as revealed in his first interview following his move from Chelsea. The 25-year-old midfielder completed his transfer on transfer deadline day, bringing City's total spending over the window to more than £450 million, a Premier League record. Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for a British record £107 million fee.

Fernandez's move mirrors the £125 million paid by Liverpool for Alexander Isak last year. The Argentina player, who was sent off in Argentina's 1-0 loss to Spain in the World Cup final, was also linked with Real Madrid earlier in the summer. He will partner with England's Elliot Anderson in City's new-look midfield, following the £116 million signing of Anderson from Nottingham Forest in July.

Fernandez, who has signed a five-year contract, acknowledged that he had always aspired to play for a club like City. Referring to City's recent success, he stated, "It's a club... that has won a lot in recent years. It's a club that is making history in football and, for me, it's a huge challenge."

Under new manager Enzo Maresca, who took over from Pep Guardiola, City have undergone a significant rebuild after the departures of key players Rodri, John Stones, and Bernardo Silva. The 25-year-old, who won the World Cup with Argentina in 2022, praised Maresca, calling him "a top manager" and expressing his gratitude for the manager's role in bringing him to the club.

Fernandez highlighted the importance of Maresca's previous work with him at Chelsea, stating, "He's very similar to Latin people, very passionate. So, for me, it's a pleasure to work with him." He added that he was grateful for Maresca's role in securing his move to Manchester City.
