Enos Mafokate, South Africa’s first Black show jumping champion, dies at 80

Enos Mafokate, South Africa's inaugural Black show jumping champion and esteemed equestrian, has passed away at the age of 80, according to a statement from his family released on Thursday. Mafokate shattered racial barriers in an equestrian discipline dominated by white competitors during South Africa's apartheid era. Referred to as "Kgosi ya Dipere," a Sesotho phrase translating to "King of Horses," Mafokate's career was guided by influential figures in South African equestrian sport who acknowledged his exceptional talent and provided support during pivotal moments when he defied racial barriers of his time.

Mafokate's career began as a stablehand before securing his first riding competition victory in 1963. However, apartheid's segregation laws barred him from competing in subsequent events until 1975. In 1980, he made history as the first Black South African to participate internationally as a show jumper, securing a fifth-place finish out of 31 competitors at the Royal International Horse Show at Wembley.

Following the dismantling of apartheid in 1991 and South Africa's reinstatement into the Olympic Games, Mafokate was honored with a role as a sports ambassador at the 1992 Barcelona Games.

His life's impact extended well beyond his personal accomplishments in the arena. In his later years, Mafokate focused on nurturing young Black riders in Soweto township via the Soweto Equestrian Centre, a horse riding school he founded in 2006. Through this institution, he mentored hundreds of youths in horse riding and animal welfare.
