South Korea struggles to prevent North Korea's frequent military demarcation line (MDL) crossings. To address this issue, Seoul should bolster surveillance and set clear response measures. North Korea's actions, including road construction, troop positioning, and mine laying near the MDL, indicate a deliberate effort to solidify the border.

In response, South Korea's military is contemplating relocating thermal observation devices closer to the MDL to improve monitoring accuracy. However, this move raises concerns about the military's willingness to stop North Korean intrusions. If South Korea eases vigilance along the border, it may be undermining its own security.

North Korea's recent shift to a "hostile two-state" doctrine and its intensified nuclear and missile development program further complicate the situation. Seoul must adopt a firm stance against North Korean violations and work closely with the United Nations Command to strengthen surveillance and response systems. This issue should be a top priority for Defense Minister nominee Kang Shin-chul as he assumes office.

Protecting South Korea's security requires clear principles and robust response capabilities, not mere words or concessions.
