Dungeons & Dragons Live-Action Series ‘Ravenloft’ In Works At Netflix From John August, Alfonso Cuarón & Hasbro, Succeeds ‘The Forgotten Realms’

Netflix is in the midst of developing a live-action spinoff titled "Ravenloft" for its expanding Dungeons & Dragons franchise. The project, penned by writer and executive producer John August and executive producer Alfonso Cuarón, will be produced by Hasbro Entertainment. This news was reported by Deadline, which also mentioned that "The Forgotten Realms," another announced live-action D&D series from Drew Crevello and Shawn Levy, is no longer in development.

Cuarón, renowned for his Academy Award-winning film "Roma," will be making his debut collaboration with Netflix. "Ravenloft" promises to be a "prestige fantasy series where adventure collides with gothic horror and tragic romance." The story will revolve around the origins of the vampire tyrant Darklord Strahd von Zarovich, a character notorious for his saga of power, love, obsession, and undead transformation. The series aims to chart his journey from tragic antihero to one of Dungeons & Dragons' most infamous villains.

Deadline notes that any goth-kid energy from the series is expected to be appreciated by Netflix, as "Ravenloft" is positioned to fit alongside their hit supernatural mystery/coming-of-age comedy-drama, "Wednesday." Additionally, it is speculated that both series may adopt a similar deadpan, Hot-Topic cadence, given August's previous writing credits for several Tim Burton features, including "Big Fish," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "Corpse Bride," "Dark Shadows," and "Frankenweenie."
