China-Singapore security team claims breakthrough in hacking Starlink terminals

A cybersecurity research team from Singapore and Shanghai has claimed a significant breakthrough in hacking the latest Starlink user terminals. The independent research institute, Darknavy, detailed in a social media post on Tuesday how they used advanced hardware attacks to gain full control over the terminals. This unauthorized access allows the team to execute custom code on the devices, opening up new possibilities for security studies of the Starlink satellite system.

Starlink, a satellite internet service by SpaceX, operates by connecting user terminals to satellites in near-Earth orbit, which relay data through ground gateways to the internet. The terminals act as both an antenna and a router, making them critical nodes for communication with satellites. Despite the terminals being previously unhackable, Darknavy was able to achieve this feat through sophisticated techniques.

This discovery could potentially allow researchers to explore the interaction between Starlink satellites and ground equipment, simulating and analyzing communication protocols to identify vulnerabilities.
