CBSE Three-Language Policy: Centre Working On Implementation Plan, Supreme Court Seeks Details

New Delhi, Sep 3: The Centre is working on an implementation plan for CBSE's three-language policy, which mandates the study of three languages for Class 9 students. Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati informed the Supreme Court that the CBSE is working out various modalities for the policy, which was made compulsory from July 1, 2026.

The top court deferred the matter by a week, requesting more time to consider the implementation challenges. Observing that children should not be under pressure, the court emphasized the need to address issues arising from the policy. The court stated that while introducing the policy is not wrong, the focus should be on finding a balanced solution to ensure smooth implementation and address any impediments.

The policy requires students to study two native Indian languages and one foreign language as their third language, with Class 9 students using Class 6 R3 textbooks until dedicated R3 textbooks are available.
