Brennan claims third Vuelta victory in stage 11 sprint

Matthew Brennan secured his third victory at the Vuelta a Espana on Wednesday by winning stage 11, demonstrating his prowess in a sprint finish. The 21-year-old cyclist from Visma-Lease a Bike crossed the finish line ahead of Bryan Coquard and Jordi Meeus, with overall leader Enric Mas retaining his red jersey.

Brennan's triumph was celebrated with a hand gesture by his teammate Wout van Aert, who had led the charge into the final stretch. The British rider expressed gratitude towards his team-mates, who have all secured podium finishes in Grand Tours and major classics. He emphasized their unwavering support, with one of his teammates remarking that Brennan's consistent victories were a testament to their dedication and teamwork.

The 153.8-kilometre stage, largely flat and held in Lorca, Spain, was designed to showcase sprinters' skills. Ethan Hayter was among four riders who broke away in the early stages, but they were caught around the 90-kilometre mark. The peloton fragmented on the day's lone climb, the Morron de Totana, which was positioned around 30km from the finish line.

The main sprint contenders, along with Mas, formed a compact group as they approached the finish, navigating through a challenging final stretch marked by tight corners and various road furniture.

Brennan's victory further solidified his chances of claiming the overall win in the upcoming 12th stage, a 166.6-kilometre mountainous route from Vera to Lorca, featuring five categorized climbs, including the double climb of Velefique and the summit finish at Calar Alto.
