Azalina: PM term limit and AG/PP separation Bills ready for Parliament

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 — The Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Minister, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, revealed that a Bill to impose a term limit on the prime minister is prepared for its second reading in the Dewan Rakyat. However, the timing for bringing this Bill to the floor depends on the Leader of the House, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Azalina clarified that amendments to the Federal Constitution, which would allow the term limit, necessitate a two-thirds majority in Parliament. The same requirement applies to another proposal: separating the roles of the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor. These reforms, if passed, could alleviate concerns about politically motivated prosecutions and boost trust in the prosecution system, especially since the latter position would be appointed through a parliamentary process.

Azalina urged all parliamentarians, irrespective of their party allegiance, to back these bills, emphasizing the potential benefits for the nation.
