Asia’s premier flower hub sets new benchmarks in trading scale and logistics efficiency

The Dounan Flower Market in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China, is emerging as a premier flower trading hub in Asia, with record-setting annual volumes and advanced logistics capabilities. The Kunming International Flora Auction Trading Center, a key trading platform in the market, conducts daily auctions beginning at 1:00 p.m., with bids processed in as little as 0.6 seconds on electronic screens.

This high-speed auction system facilitates the rapid trading of large quantities of fresh-cut flowers. Ahead of the Qixi Festival, a Chinese equivalent of Valentine's Day, the market saw tens of millions of flower stems sold to both domestic and international buyers. During this peak period, the average price of major fresh-cut flower categories increased by about 15 percent compared to pre-festival levels, with premium flowers like high-quality roses reaching nearly 15 yuan ($2.23) per stem.

In 2025, the market saw an impressive trading volume of 15.476 billion fresh-cut flowers, with a transaction value of 13.484 billion yuan (roughly $2 billion). Dounan currently hosts 3,300 enterprises and 15,000 business entities, with 46,500 of its 70,000 residents employed in the flower industry. Approximately seven out of every ten fresh-cut flowers sold in China originate from Dounan, and its distribution network extends to over 50 countries worldwide.

The market's auction system is designed to accommodate the perishable nature of fresh-cut flowers, using a descending-price model that enables rapid transactions. The efficient logistics network ensures that flowers move quickly from auction facilities to domestic and international markets, with international shipments reaching destinations such as Singapore, South Korea, and Malaysia within two days.

This combination of large-scale production, centralized trading, high-speed auctions, and integrated logistics has positioned Dounan as a critical hub for the global fresh-cut flower trade, supporting China's flower industry's international growth.
