Artificial beaver dams saw juvenile coho salmon survival rates go from 8% to 60%

Artificial beaver dams constructed in northern California have significantly increased the survival rates of juvenile coho salmon, a threatened species. In the Scott River valley, which was once home to numerous beavers, the introduction of artificial dams in Sugar Creek and French Creek has proven to be highly effective. Prior to the creation of these dams, the survival rate of juvenile coho salmon was as low as 8%, but this has now soared to 60% after the implementation of the artificial structures.

The dams have not only provided critical habitat for the coho salmon but have also maintained cooler water temperatures crucial for their growth. These low-cost, small-scale interventions have yielded impressive results, with more salmon returning to the Scott River than ever before, even during severe droughts. While the artificial dams have rejuvenated the ecosystem, it's a bittersweet reminder that beavers can only thrive if landowners allow them to inhabit their land.
