Appeal court sacks Oluloro of Iloro-Ekiti, monarch heads to Supreme Court

The Court of Appeal in Iloro-Ekiti has dismissed Oba James Oluwafemi Olugbesoye, the Oluloro, ordering his removal from the throne. The decision, made on August 31, 2026, validates a previous ruling by the Ekiti State High Court. The Court of Appeal affirmed the High Court's judgment, effectively deposing the monarch. The plaintiff's legal team, led by Falade Olasunkanmi, confirmed that the Certified True Copy of the judgment will be released soon.

The judgment did not criticize the selection and appointment process but rather the failure to perform traditional rites. Oba Olugbesoye acknowledged not performing the rites in line with native laws and customs. His legal counsel, Ezekiel Agunbiade, has contested the verdict, stating that they have not yet received the CTC of the judgment.

Agunbiade also questioned the lack of pictorial evidence, noting that the Kabiyesi presented 32 photographic proofs. Oba Olugbesoye expressed shock at the decision, questioning the standing of those who filed the case, as they are not kingmakers. He maintained that he adhered to all traditional requirements and that his coronation was well-documented, attended by numerous dignitaries, including the then Deputy Governor and Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji.

Regarding the rites performed at the Ajero's palace, Oba Olugbesoye explained that the traditions of Ijero and Iloro-Ekiti are intertwined, and that the first Oluloro performed some rites in Ijero-Ekiti. The candidate presented by the opposing side is deceased, set for burial today.
