Anwar to decide when PM term limit bill will be tabled, says Azalina

Law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said announced that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, as the leader of the House, has the discretion to decide whether the bill limiting the prime minister's tenure to ten years will be tabled during the upcoming parliamentary session. The bill was prepared for its second reading in the Dewan Rakyat, with the next sitting slated to commence on October 5 and conclude on December 8.

Azalina affirmed that all necessary preparations have been completed, but the ultimate decision rests with Anwar Ibrahim. The bill necessitates a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat, as it entails amendments to the Federal Constitution. Additionally, Azalina urged Members of Parliament from all parties to back both bills, emphasizing that these reforms could diminish the impression of politically motivated prosecutions.

The bill aiming to separate the roles of the attorney-general and public prosecutor was initially introduced on February 23 but fell short of the required two-thirds majority during its second reading on March 2.
