“오픈AI, 총기 난사 방조”…캐나다 총격 참사 생존자, 30건 추가 제소

An additional 30 lawsuits were filed against OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, following a February 2023 school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, Canada. According to reports from Bloomberg and Canadian media outlets, 30 students, teachers, and school administrators across the United States filed lawsuits against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, under a federal California court.

They claim that the company and its CEO failed to address safety concerns and contributed to the school shooting. The plaintiffs argue that OpenAI and Altman failed to recognize warning signs of potential violence and did not take necessary precautions. The shooting occurred when the perpetrator, using a new account, re-entered the platform after killing his mother and sister at home and then six others at Tumbler Ridge Elementary School.

The plaintiffs believe that OpenAI prioritized the company's reputation over safety. OpenAI's Chief Strategy Officer, Jason Wu, denied these allegations, stating that the claim that they did not prioritize safety is "absolutely false." Altman acknowledged his company's mistake in not reporting the perpetrator's account to the authorities in April.

This brings the total number of lawsuits against OpenAI related to the shooting to 37, including 7 already filed in April by the victims and their families.
