Acer Vero 16 Hands On: Room To Upgrade

At IFA 2026, Acer unveiled the Acer Vero 16, a laptop that distinguishes itself with its eco-friendly design and repairability features. The Vero series is known for using recycled materials, and this latest model continues that commitment while adding repairability to the mix. However, the laptop is still in the pre-release stage, making it difficult to gauge its performance in real-world scenarios. Despite this, the models on display can offer a preliminary sense of what to expect.

Visually, the Vero 16 distinguishes itself with an aluminium chassis in a brownish finish, giving it a rugged appearance. The visible screws on the hinge contribute to the rugged, utilitarian vibe. Additionally, the cover features a solvent-free powder-coated finish, which Acer claims enhances wear resistance. While this aspect remains to be proven, the texture does feel somewhat dusty, which might take some getting used to.

On the inside, the laptop reveals a plastic bottom panel that doubles as a quick repair guide, displaying a diagram of removable parts. The edges of the panel are slightly raised, providing a better grip when opening the cover. However, the demo unit seemed a bit finicky, as the panel remained stuck even after considerable effort. Eventually, it did come off, but not as easily as claimed. This could indicate that the mechanism may wear out with use, which would be concerning for the longevity claim if true.

While the design offers a layer of convenience by allowing easy access to the laptop's innards with just hands, the rest of the device remains a different story. Fewer screws to keep track of could be appreciated by some users, but the overall experience may vary.
