Abu Dhabi’s driverless racing league set for Saturday’s international debut

Abu Dhabi will host its first multi-car driverless race outside Yas Marina Circuit this Saturday, September 5, marking the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League's (A2RL) international debut. Five teams – Tum, Kinetiz, Unimore, Constructor and Polimove – will compete using identical Dallara Super Formula SF23 cars. Stephane Timpano, A2RL's chief executive, emphasizes the honor and responsibility of bringing modernity to one of the world's most historic circuits.

The Imola circuit's challenges will test the autonomous systems' traffic response and decision-making capabilities at racing speeds. A2RL has spent the past two years developing its technology in Abu Dhabi, but sees international expansion as crucial for the technology's future. The league has progressed from four cars to six racing at over 250kph, with the gap between its fastest autonomous system and a professional driver narrowing from 10 seconds to 1.58 seconds.

Timpano envisions the technology being used to enhance traditional racing performance and safety. Emirati race engineer Amna Almarzooqi, who transitioned from aviation, highlights the value of precision-focused training in both aviation and race car engineering. She encourages students to embrace emerging technologies in the UAE, emphasizing the importance of education and investment in technical fields.
