A new font promises to hide your text from AI.

Mixfont, a design and technology company, has developed a font called Decoy Font that aims to conceal your text from AI algorithms. Dezeen reports that Decoy Font employs a dual-layer approach for each letter, consisting of a clear outline and a darker, blurred shape beneath.

While humans can easily discern both layers—try squinting or moving away—AI systems cannot. This is Mixfont's second attempt at making text AI-proof. Their first experiment, Ghost Font, used a nauseating font that hid by moving.

Mixfont explains that most AI systems analyze the pixels of an image closely. When this type of image is fed into an AI model, the large language model (LLM) focuses on the foreground text because it is most clearly outlined. Decoy Font's unique design exploits this behavior, making it challenging for AI to process the text accurately. The company views this as a creative and effective way to resist AI systems.

While Mixfont touts its AI-resistant font as a design object and a defiant gesture against AI, the company itself is not immune to AI. Mixfont describes itself as "an AI-powered digital font foundry," offering various tools that allow users to generate synthetic fonts based on other people's designs. Mixfont's founder, Eric Lu, acknowledges that their AI-resistant experiments are part of a broader exploration of AI's limits.

Lu told Dezeen that the reaction to Decoy Font suggests that many people feel frustrated with AI's presence in their lives and are looking for ways to protect themselves.
