37 suspected oil thieves die after inhaling substance in Rivers

At least 37 suspected oil thieves died in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State after inhaling crude oil, according to reports. The incident occurred early Thursday when youths attempted to load the petroleum product from an illegally tapped point at a jetty. Many others were missing following the incident, which took place in the coastal community.

Over 100 people from Okrika and neighboring communities had stormed the scene, loading the product from the illegal tapping point in locally made boats. A strong smell filled the area, causing several of the youths to collapse. Some victims fell into the river, while those who escaped suffered serious respiratory problems. As of now, over 37 Okrika residents have been identified as victims, with six others still unaccounted for.

The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) confirmed the incident, stating that over 37 persons suspected of oil theft died after inhaling what was locally referred to as "Indorama fuel".
